[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I’m sorry I’ve not been writing as often as I usually do. I’m gonna try to get two posts up this week to make up for it. So without any further ado, lets get started!
One of the reasons I like anime is because, stylistically, it’s very different from western animation (not counting any movies done by Disney which anime was deliberately trying to copy at the start). But every so often I stumble across something that reminds me of the American cartoons I grew up on, at least in terms of humor or in today’s case, animation. Today we’re looking at Studio Gainax’s 2010 spectacle, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt.
Panty and Stocking are a pair of less than angelic angels who’ve been banished to earth due to more than just their perverse lust for sex and sweets. To earn their way back into the pearly gates, they must collect Heaven Coins by defeating ghosts. Overseen by the priest Garterbelt these two proceed to fuck up Danten City as its’ never been before.
That’s the basic premise of PSG in a nutshell. Short and simple, without a lot of flowery descriptivism and that’s because the show itself is rather short…though I certainly wouldn’t call it “sweet”. The show takes refuge in audacity largely where dialogue and actions are concerned but perhaps also in it’s artistic style as this PowerPuff Girlsesque show is neither brightly polished nor entirely obscene to look at but somewhere in between. Personally I like the art style. I think it gives the show character and it wouldn’t work nearly as well if the show were done in a traditional “anime” style. That being said, there are points where it slips into that style namely for the angel’s transformation sequence. The humor and dialogue are stewing somewhere in the depths of hell though as not an episode…nay, not a minute goes by without the utterance of some profanity though most of it comes from either Panty or Garterbelt. Unlike most series though, PSG tends to go the episodic route. There are events that present a continuity within the series as well as build to a greater story but for the most part the series is comprised of vignettes that largely stand alone.
I feel like PSG is one of those series that kind of lacks as it goes further along. The first few episodes are lots of fun with poop ghosts, sex tape scandals and a queen bee at a high school. But as it goes on, it stops being as much fun as it was at the start. The only thing that really kept me going past episode 6 were the Demon sisters, Scanty and Kneescocks who were my absolute favorites among the entire cast. Their dailouge is written as though someone on board swallowed a theasaurus and contrast the Anarchy sisters perfectly with their love of rules and order. The boredom aspect will probably streach out further if you watch the show in it’s original language of Japanese which is fun to listen to but no where near as fun as the dub. After all only English speakers know how to properly swear like sailors. Another problem I found was that Stocking got very few episodes to herself which is a shame cause I really like Stocking, despite me probably being more like Panty in real life. There’s a slight air of mystery to her character and it’s also just fun to hear more of Monica Rial swearing her ass off. I feel like my most major problem with the series is the ending. It completely comes out of nowhere and leaves you wanting to see what happens next and then it just ends with a hook for a second season that would’ve been really interesting but ultimately never came to fruition.
But for all that, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is a really fun series. I give it my full recommendation but only if you can handle lots of sex jokes and dirty humor. If the review seems a bit short, it’s because I really didn’t have a whole lot to say about the show. It’s very straight forward and you’ll know from the first five minutes of the show if it’s for you or not. That said, I’d like to see more shows like it. I’ll see you’ll later! DaWaRou~!
