Review by Jeremias de Leon
A new arc begins as Aric of Dacia is back on Earth after becoming emperor of an alien planet and now being exiled from that planet. Matt Kindt however takes the perspective of Col. Jamie Capshaw as she loses everything she has and her final shot at redemption is in none other than Aric and his X-O Manowar armor.
This issue takes a bit of a slow burn but it’s done masterfully well. That is to say nothing feels wasted or extraneous. Matt Kindt really wanted to drive home how Capshaw feels and how she’s affected by all that’s going on around her and to her.
Of course, there’s no spoilers in this review but things definitely ramp up near the end. It seems things from past events are going to be coming into play here.
This issue really drives home that the art is also part of the story. Juan Jose Ryp draws the important details dead on and Andrew Dalhouse’s colors are what add the extra emotional depth that the images need to make their purpose clear. There’s one particular page that has no dialog that is just amazing in how it conveys emotion through Juan’s details and Dalhouse’s colors and no dialog.
Matt Kindt really is a master at not just crafting a story about explosions and punches but about the characters behind all this action. Yet again, it feels like an experience and a trip into the shoes of these characters, specifically Jamie Capshaw, than just some story about aliens and gung ho action. Though perhaps the end was a little too short. The middle part of the comic could have been shortened slightly to give the end a little more room to breathe. But still, this is an excellent comic and earns a 9.5 out of 10.
