Review by Jeremias de Leon
A new mysterious madness seems to be gripping Rome. To the point where even Emperor Nero wants to get to the bottom of it. Axia gets put on the case by Vestal Virgins after Nero gives them a visit.
The characters are really well written and the ancient world of Rome seems to be quite alive. Which probably shouldn’t be so hard to do for Rome since it’s a real place and although the story is fictional the time period isn’t.
The tone is a bit weird though. It does dialog and world building great, but the gore in this series seems overdone. Though the violence is important to the story, since it revolves around murder mysteries, the series seems to be steeped in realism but you see this violence that just seems like it’s from Mortal Kombat. It feels like mood whiplash.
The art as a whole looks great. Everything comes together from the character designs, scenery, and action and make a visually compelling comic.
This comic has some strangeness to it. It wants to be realistic but some of the things it does are exaggerated when it pertains to the gore. It’s quite well written though so it’s still an intriguing story and quite the page turner. Britannia : We Who Are About to Die # 1 an 8.5 out of 10.
